You try to keep your carpet clean, removing pet stains as you see them, and getting a professional cleaning when it’s time. However, at some point you’re going to need to get new carpet. When that time comes, Valley Cleanpro would like to share a few tips with you as to how you should select your new carpet based on your families needs and your wants.

Start by doing a bit of research on types of carpet available and prices. Once you feel like you have an idea of what you’re looking for and the price range, be sure to set a budget and stick with it. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at carpet so it’s best to have the budget set before you go shopping. Have some accountability with it and get something great, that you can afford.

Next, you should consider the maintenance of the carpet. Once you’ve started narrowing your search, ask the sales-person what you can expect when it comes to keeping the carpet clean and functional. If the maintenance recommendations are more than you’re willing to commit to, then move on from that style of carpet to something that fits your lifestyle better.

Getting into the specific types of carpet you may find along the way and which ones are better for your family situation, here are some suggestions:

  • Plush carpet is really quite wonderful to walk on, sit on, and even lay on. It’s very soft, as the name would lead you to believe. There is a downside though. Not only is plush carpet generally more expensive, it also requires near daily maintenance to keep it clean and looking new. Once plush carpet is walked on, the long fibers lend themselves to seeing footprints. Plush carpet, then, is not recommended in areas with a lot of foot traffic, nor in a home with children or pets. If you do want plush carpet, it’s suggested to get it only in rooms that aren’t used frequently.
  • Berber carpet is the ultimate family carpet in that it is durable and easy to clean. Because of the berber texture, spills are less quickly absorbed by the carpet and are therefore, easier to clean.
  • Textured carpets are also great for families in that the different lengths of the carpet provide a unique method of shifting the light, making stains less visible. It’s also quite comfortable carpet. Keep in mind that there are textured berber carpets that could be ideal for large families with children and pets.
